Write the first sentence as though it may be lifted and quoted on its own — because an AI system often extracts exactly that, and nothing around it.

Why it matters
Generative engines don't read a page top to bottom and form an opinion — they scan for the passage that most directly answers the user's question and lift it. If your opening sentence is a wind-up ("AI is changing search in many ways…"), there is nothing extractable there, and the model either skips you or paraphrases something vaguer than what you'd have written.
Leading with the answer is the simplest structural habit in Phase 2. It costs nothing, it makes every page scannable for humans too, and it gives the model a clean, complete, quotable statement in the position it looks first.
Write it for the reader first. Google’s guidance for its AI features is that you don’t need to restructure pages into special Q&A chunks for AI; clear, helpful writing is what it rewards. Answer-first is simply good writing that also happens to be easy to extract.
What good looks like
The first sentence states the main claim or definition completely, with no dependency on what follows:
The opening sentence answers the page's core question outright.
It is self-contained — it makes sense quoted with zero surrounding context.
It leads with the subject and the claim, not background or throat-clearing.
Context, nuance, and caveats come after the answer, not before it.
The same direct-answer pattern repeats at the top of each major section.
Step by step
Name the question the page answers
Before writing, state the single question this page exists to answer — e.g. "What is Generative Engine Optimisation?" If you can't name one clear question, the page is trying to do too much; split it.
Answer it in the first sentence
Put the complete answer first. State the main claim or definition before any context, history, or motivation. The reader (and the model) should know the answer by the end of sentence one.
Make the sentence self-contained
Remove references that only resolve later ("this", "as mentioned above", "the approach"). The sentence must stand alone if copied into an AI answer with nothing around it.
Add context after the answer, not before
Once the answer is stated, expand: why it matters, how it works, what the exceptions are. This is the inverted-pyramid order — conclusion first, support after.
Test the sentence in isolation
Copy the first sentence out of the page and read it cold. Does it fully and accurately answer the question on its own? If it needs the next sentence to make sense, tighten it until it doesn't.
Worked examples
1 Before / after: opening lines
The same pages, rewritten so the first sentence is the answer. Each "after" is independently quotable.
Before (weak)
After (direct answer)
"AI is changing search in many ways."
"Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI systems can accurately select and cite it in generated answers."
"AI is transforming industries."
"AI Search refers to systems that generate answers rather than return ranked links."
"We help businesses grow with AI."
"We restructure web content so AI systems can extract and attribute it accurately."
"Our solution improves visibility."
"Our tool scores a URL on five dimensions of AI readability."
2 Per-section direct answers
The pattern isn't just for the page's first line — open each section with its own answer so any section can be extracted independently.
## How does GEO work?
GEO works by making content easy for AI systems to
extract, trust, and re-cite — through structure, schema,
explicit claims, and authority signals. [then: the detail...]
## Why does GEO matter now?
GEO matters because AI systems increasingly answer queries
directly instead of linking out, so citation — not ranking —
is the new visibility. [then: the evidence...]
Common mistakes
Mistake
Fix
Opening with a wind-up ("In today's world…")
Cut it; start with the claim or definition.
Burying the answer in paragraph three
Move it to sentence one; demote the context.
First sentence depends on later text ("this approach…")
Make it self-contained — name the thing explicitly.
Marketing slogan instead of an answer
State what it is or does, factually.
Only the page top leads with an answer
Repeat the pattern at the top of every section.
Limits of this advice
No study isolates the effect of answer-first position on AI citation; this is established editorial practice (the inverted pyramid) applied to extraction.
A direct first sentence helps a model quote you accurately. It does not make a thin page citable.
Checklist
The page's core question is named and singular
The first sentence answers it completely
That sentence makes sense quoted in isolation
Context and caveats come after the answer, not before
Each major section opens with its own direct answer
No opening slogans, throat-clearing, or unresolved references
